Come To Me and Rest: Line By Line Explanation

A Bible Study Teaching On Matthew 11:25-30

Matthew 11:25

“At that time Jesus said, “I thank You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to infants.” (MEV)

Verse Explanation:

  • Intimacy begins with thanksgiving. Being thankful and giving praise is always the first step to becoming intimate with our Lord and Savior. We can also find this same order in the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus laid out for us. The first line states, “Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name," - Jesus begins the prayer with thanksgiving and praise. Praise takes us from non-intimacy to intimacy in consecrated prayer and in our daily walk with the Lord.

  • Wise and Prudent = Those who already have their minds made up that they know what is to come. These people rely on their intellect rather than the Spirit of God.

  • Infants = Born-Again Believers. These people rely solely on their guardian, Father, and Savior to survive and continue into eternal glory.

How To Live As A Born-Again Believer:

    Matthew 11:26

Verse Explanation:

“Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.” (KJV)

  • Even though there are different types of people, either wise & prudent OR infant, born-again believers, the Father is still good to have created both, and it seemed good in his eyes to do so.

Matthew 11:27

“All things are delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son, except the Father. And no one knows the Father, except the Son and he to whom the Son will reveal Him.” (MEV)

Verse Explanation:

  • All people are handed over to Jesus because Jesus is the deliverer of humanity.

  • No one knows the Son as the Father knows him.

  • To know means to have intimacy with something or someone. Because of this healthy intimacy between the Father and Son, the Father can trust Him and places those He’s created in the hands of Jesus.

  • The only category of people who know the Father intimately are those who know the Son intimately enough that the Father is also revealed to them. We come to the Father THROUGH the Son.

  • Revealed=Revelation. Revelation can only come by way of the Spirit of God. When we, as believers, accept Jesus Christ into our lives as Lord and savior, we are born again, and the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of us. The Holy Spirit is the spirit in which we seek to gain revelation.

  • Revelation thrives off of intimacy. The more you spend with God, the more that is revealed to you about His mind, character, word, etc. This concept we find even in interactions with other human beings.

  • Jesus is the LIVING word - spend time with the word, and it will be revealed to you in great depth.

    What Is Spiritual Deliverance?

Matthew 11:28

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.” (MEV)

Verse Explanation:

  • In delivery, you need someone to help you in labour to comfort you and ease the pain. Labour is intense, and the closer you get to full delivery - the more contractions there are. It’s the same in spiritual deliverance. The closer you are to your full-deliverance, the more intense the pain, because the trauma becomes more real than ever as the uprooting and exposing takes place.

  • Trauma, pain, stress, and worry are some of the heavy burdens that this verse speaks to. These can be heavy for a person and if a person is trying to carry it all alone, it can become lethal. Why Does The Spiritual Labor Intensify? Shouldn’t It Immediately Become Easier Once I Surrender My Life To God?

  • When we become intimate with Jesus, and the Father is revealed to us through the revelation of the Holy Spirit, we quickly begin to find our TRUE identity. Getting to know the Father means getting to know our true inheritance. We are called to be Children of God, Daughters/Sons to the Most High King, Royal Priests, and created in the likeness and image of God. When our identity is revealed, warfare intensifies to counteract this identity. Satan knows that if you last through the full-delivery (spiritual maturation process), then you will walk boldly in who God has always called you to be. Here lies where the damage to the Kingdom of darkness truly takes place.

  • During this intense delivery process true and continuous rest is found only in Christ.

How Do You Find Rest In The Midst Of WarFare?

Matthew 11:29

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” (KJV)

Verse Explanation:

  • Unyoke yourself from demonic yokes and yoke yourself up with Christ.

  • Learn all about Jesus. You do this by becoming intimate with him and allowing the Holy Spirit to help you come into agreement with who He is, how He thinks, and what The Father’s will is for your life.

  • Jesus gave us two characteristics to continuously learn about and become. These characteristics are meek and lowly. In essence, Jesus is saying if you are meek and lowly, then you will have guaranteed rest in me. If you are not meek and lowly ask the Holy Spirit to cultivate these things within you.

  • The definition of meek is to be submissive to the will of the Father.

  • The definition of lowly is to be humble.

  • As a born-again believer, Holy Spirit is continuously cultivating meekness and lowliness in your heart until it is made pure before the Lord. Just because a person may announce that they are meek and lowly does not make it so. God tests and HEART. The Father’s children must also have a heart like his Son Jesus.

  • We must all strive to become more like Jesus everyday to gain the rest that will sustain us throughout this life.

  • Rest is Christ means rest for your soul. The soul encompasses your mind, will, and emotions. May your soul find rest in Christ alone.

Matthew 11:30

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (KJV)

Verse Explanation:

  • Matthew 11:30 is a popular verse among believers, and it is a spiritual affirmation of encouragement to confirm who Jesus is and what we receive from Him when we submit and grow close to him.

  • If what you are yoked to is not easy and the burden of that yoke not light, then you are either yoked to a demonic entity OR your trust is not put fully in Christ, and you are not able to receive rest.

  • What are you yoked up to, and how can you partner with Holy Spirit to be yoked to the right things, partnerships, careers, etc.?

  • Jesus does have a burden for us to carry when we yoke up to Him and his message however, this burden is in NO comparison to that of the worlds burdens. The burden's of this world are heavy laden, while the burden we receive from Jesus is light.

What Is The Burden Of Christ?

According to Matthew 16:24-26, Jesus tells His disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”. This means that each born-again believer has a cross that they must bear in this life, and this cross can come with slander, hatred, animosity, loss of friendship, and more. However, Jesus also promises us that in His unfailing rest our burden will be forever light.
